Introduce kids to the critters that make their home in a decaying old tree with this beautifully illustrated and accessible picture book. Perfect for preschool and kindergarten classrooms and science curriculums for the study of nature, forests, trees, and life cycles.

An ancient oak is hit by a lightening strike, and tumbles to the ground! But don't worry—the tree is now home to all kinds of critters. Introduce young readers to termites, salamanders, garter snakes, and more animals and insects that make the rotting tree their home with a lighthearted building rhyme and realistic illustrations.

Backmatter includes:

  • Field Notes: information and fun facts about each animal mentioned in the book
  • Activities and Projects: outlines for education projects for classrooms and families such as a day-in-the-life of an animal journal exercise, creating a picture collage of animal cut-outs from magazines, and a photo journal

K-Gr 2-An old and majestic oak falls deep in the woods. This picture book seeks to answer the question of whether the tree is now dead or still alive by introducing the many creatures who inhabit its remains. The simple verse, which become a repetitive cumulative rhyme, acquaints readers with termites, garter snakes, red velvet mites, daddy longlegs, chipmunks, and roly-polies. Eventually a class comes by, and a child asks, "Is this log alive?" Readers are left to draw their own conclusions. The lavish, full-page watercolor illustrations done in muted shades of brown and yellow are naturalistic, but lack visual excitement. Supplementary pages encourage further exploration through simple research and art projects. This title might be useful for simple science or nature lessons by offering information on an easily found habitat.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, formerly at Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY

This picture book explores the woodland habitat surrounding a rotting log. Somewhat static double-page-spread illustrations provide snapshots of the environment and introduce a variety of insects and animals. Appended "Field Notes" and "Activities, Projects, and Lots of Cool Ideas!" are more useful than the awkwardly rhymed, gratuitously cumulative main text. Websites.
