In the 1950s and 1960s and on into the 1970s, the United States was involved in two wars fought far from home—one in aid of South Korea against the neighboring Communist North Korea, and a second waged through the jungles of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Both of these military engagements were a reaction to what the United States feared as being Communist takeovers, and were surrounded by a strong degree of political controversy. This book explores both wars in detail to help readers understand why the conflicts occurred and what their lasting effects have been.

Gr 10 Up-This series offers overviews of Americas wars in chapters such as Precursors to the Korean War and The Stalemate Breaks, 1918, followed by brief, alphabetically arranged biographical sketches of military and political leaders. Although the books discuss the wars causes, battles, and outcomes and provide objective coverage of controversial military and political subjects, their main focus is on military strategies and battlefield action, which occasionally makes for dry reading. There are no maps, a significant weakness, but sidebars, primary-source excerpts, and average-quality black-and-white photos and illustrations supplement the texts. While these volumes will not replace the many existing titles, they will be helpful to report writers.
