This comprehensive bibliography includes books written about or set in Appalachia from the 18th century to the present. Titles represent the entire region as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission, including portions of 13 states stretching from southern New York to northern Mississippi. The bibliography is arranged in alphabetical order by author, and each title is accompanied by an annotation, most of which include composite reviews and critical analyses of the work. All classic genres of children's literature are represented.

The compilers have selected more than 2000 books set in the 13-state region and have included intelligent and interesting annotations for each one. The organization allows readers to search for a book in a number of different ways. The titles are listed alphabetically by author. An appendix lists all books and authors by grade levels; in addition, there are two indexes, one for author, title, illustrator and a second for subject matter. The annotations are thorough, yet succinct, making use of previously published reviews from sources such as the "Horn Book Guide, Booklist, " and "School Library Journal". The compilers' goal is to "influence the future of Appalachian children's literature by exposing its strengths, weaknesses, and sometimes plain absurdities." This is a super resource for teachers and librarians, not just for those located in the Appalachian region, but for anyone interested in the world of children's literature."Wendy Smith-D'Arezzo, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD"
