The American Civil War hit close to home as it pitted brother against brother, Americans fighting one another to defend their differing beliefs. Years of war were followed by a subsequent period of Reconstruction, wherein the nation tried to piece itself back together in an uneasy political climate—a trying time in American history. This book focuses on the underlying causes, important battles, remembered personages, and lasting outcomes of the Civil War through detailed information and supporting photos.

Gr 10 Up-This series offers overviews of Americas wars in chapters such as Precursors to the Korean War and The Stalemate Breaks, 1918, followed by brief, alphabetically arranged biographical sketches of military and political leaders. Although the books discuss the wars causes, battles, and outcomes and provide objective coverage of controversial military and political subjects, their main focus is on military strategies and battlefield action, which occasionally makes for dry reading. There are no maps, a significant weakness, but sidebars, primary-source excerpts, and average-quality black-and-white photos and illustrations supplement the texts. While these volumes will not replace the many existing titles, they will be helpful to report writers.
