Sam Krupnik, mad at his mother because she won't let him wear his newly acquired plastic fangs in the house, decides to run away.

What happens when a boy with a plan to run away to Alaska makes a few stops around the neighborhood first?

  • A Hilarious Misunderstanding: Sam decides to leave home over a pair of plastic fangs, planning to join his fellow "fanged" creatures in Alaska: the walruses!
  • Quirky Neighborhood Friends: His journey includes stops to see a mailman who builds pasta sculptures and an elderly neighbor who helps him prepare for his trip.
  • Big Sister Wisdom: Sam's older sister, Anastasia, shares a story about her own "running away" adventure and teaches him that it's very grown-up to change your mind.
  • Perfect for Early Readers: An ideal early chapter book from Newbery Medalist Lois Lowry, full of warmth, humor, and relatable family moments.
