Iconic Loved Unexpected • Iconic Loved Unexpected marks a defining moment in the history of Newcastle Art Gallery. Following a four-year closure and a $48 million redevelopment, one of Australia’s most significant regional collections has reemerged in a transformed building that fundamentally rethinks how a public collection is experienced. Rather than simply revealing more works, the exhibition asks what makes a collection iconic, why certain works become loved, and how unexpected juxtapositions can continually reshape the way audiences see them.

Zoe Grey × Joshua Andree • Two Tasmanian artists both evoke the emotions of their personal landscapes at Despard this September, though with entirely different methodologies. In the northwest of the state, Zoe Grey draws on the memory of place in both abstraction and text-based work, while south of Hobart, Joshua Andree turns his gaze upwards to muse on the ever-shifting sky.
