Key personnel

Fleurieu Living Magazine

Our advertising partners • A special thanks to the advertising partners that have made a long-term commitment to FLM.

From the publishing editor • Sitting in our office early one morning, just a week before going to print, there is a cacophony of corellas swirling around and making their mournful (read irritating) call. These birds do not seem to have an internal clock. They wake up too early and go to bed too late.

#summerlikealocal • The #summerlikealocal campaign was a collaboration between Fleurieu Living Magazine and Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism intended to celebrate the region through the eyes of locals and visitors who adore it.

Reimagining Ponderosa • Perched high above the grazing pastures of Hindmarsh Valley, a newly transformed home sits quietly within its landscape. Located on the property Ponderosa, this adaptive re-use project has been shaped by heritage, contemporary craftsmanship and a close family collaboration between Chris and Tracey Smith, their son Lewis Smith and their team at Collectiv Group.

Painting Port Willunga • The jetty poles at Port Willunga have long captured the imagination. The weathered remnants of the second jetty, built in the 1860s and ultimately claimed by crashing waves and relentless tides, are now among the most photographed scenes in the region. Their allure is heightened by Port Willunga’s epic sunsets and glowing skies, which silhouette the poles against dramatic coastal cliffs, creating images that have become emblematic of the state.

A taste of Kangaroo Island • SeaLink five-day gourmet explorer self-drive package

Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize • From its inception in 1998, the Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize has stood as one of the premier art prizes in Australia. An example of history and modernity – having been won by distinguished artists such as inaugural winner Robert Hannaford – the event has been reinvigorated and revamped.

Designed for living • ‘A house in fact is a metaphysical instrument, a mythical tool with which we try to introduce a reflection of eternity into our momentary existence.’ Juhani Pallasmaa, Finnish architect.

Under the Sun: three winemakers, one roof, and a new way to drink McLaren Vale • In the Old Coach Road precinct of Aldinga where small businesses hum with local energy, a new wine collective is quietly reshaping the cellar door experience.

Of darkness and light An aesthetic of devotion • Pushing through the heavy arcade doors of this former church-turned-home in Middleton, built in 1863 as a Primitive Methodist chapel, I think of those who passed through before me. Farmers praying for rain, mothers for their children. People bargaining with their God in the way only the broken ever do. Ceremonies of marriage, life and death. A thousand months of Sundays spent in reverence as people seek salvation from the elements, and one another.

No imports, no apologies • For The Salopian Inn’s Alex Marchetti, the idea of stocking only Australian-made beverages began at a wine tasting.

A voice for the wild • There is a peaceful strength to Pete Owen, Director of South Australia’s Wilderness Society, one that is evident before we even meet. I discover this as I ring to apologise for being delayed by children who’ve insisted on a swim at Horseshoe Bay where Pete and I are meeting.
